What is Indian Traditional Yoga?

India is yoga’s place of origin where we can trace yoga practice back to 5,000 years ago.

Indian ancient sages have discovered the natural phenomena of body and mind through systematic practices, observations and experimentation.  They then transmitted their knowledge and experience to their students. The students, in turn, practice, observe and experiment, and become ready to teach.

This is how the essence of Indian traditional yoga is preserved and ancient teachings are passed on.

Purpose of Yoga Teacher Training Course

We intend to show you the true yogic path that is traditionally passed on with its origin, essence and integrity preserved since ancient times. You will go through a process of exploring and understanding different practices of Indian ancient yogis.  In this way, you will start an inner journey of stillness and silence in physical postures, purification process and meditation.  The inner journey will then guide you through self-transformation process.

The course is based on the teachings from Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi, Yogacharya Dr. Raparthi Rama Rao, Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati and many other masters, jnanis, yogis and teachers.  These masters and yogis have selflessly transmitted their knowledge and experience and given inspirations for preserving the ancient teachings.  We humbly offer the 200-hour course and 300-hour course to those students who are ready to receive and pass on such teachings.

Professional training

The teacher training course is offered by Home of Light Indian Traditional Yoga, a registered yoga school of Yoga Alliance (USA).   After completing the course, students are eligible to register as registered yoga teacher (RYT), an internationally recognized yoga teacher qualification.

Highlights of the Course

Himalayan Tradition

All teachings are based on self-experience from practices under the direct guidance of a yogi of the traditional Himalaya lineage. The knowledge has been strictly preserved and is to be passed on to those who are ready to receive.

Indian Scriptures

The purpose of studying Indian scriptures on yoga is not only to transmit book knowledge, but also to provide explanations on personal experience.  You will acquire an in-depth understanding on how to apply the knowledge in the practices and how to progress through your own personal experience.

Roots of Yoga

We will bring you back to the source and roots of all different styles of yoga practices in the modern world. The teacher will teach you in the Indian traditional way, following the unique application of the ancient yogic techniques.  This course will transcend you to a new level of practices of asana, pranayama, bandhas, kriyas, mudras, yoga nidra and meditation.

Life-changing experience

It will be a life-changing experience with the focus on your inner journey.  The teacher will guide you intellectually, mentally and physically to grow within yourself.  You will also acquire the skills to inspire others to start their yoga journeys.

Self-practice Sequence

To help you keep up your energy level and teaching quality on an ongoing basis, we will teach you a yoga self-practice sequence.  The sequence is specifically designed to open body channels and chakras (energy centres) step by step.  Therefore, you can attain strength and flexibility in body and mind through the practice of this sequence.

Yoga Sadhana

In Sanskrit, Sadhana means personal effort made to attain one’s goal.  The teacher will guide you to start yoga Sadhana to achieve your personal goals in life.
